Dry Bean Market Size in Western Africa

The West African dry bean market amounted to $X in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable downturn. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Nigeria (X tons), Niger (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons), with a combined 82% share of total production. Mali, Ghana, Senegal and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Senegal (with a CAGR of +16.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average dry bean yield totaled X kg per ha in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the year before. Over the period under review, the yield, however, saw a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the yield increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the dry bean yield reached the maximum level at X kg per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of beans (dry) production in Western Africa reduced to X ha, leveling off at 2021. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 12%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, dry bean exports in Western Africa surged to X tons, rising by 44% against the year before. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 109% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, dry bean exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 78% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Niger represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 75% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), constituting a 17% share of total exports. Burkina Faso (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Niger increased at an average annual rate of +15.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nigeria (+160.8%), Ghana (+47.1%) and Senegal (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +160.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Burkina Faso (-27.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Niger (+56 p.p.), Nigeria (+17 p.p.) and Ghana (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Burkina Faso (-70.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest dry bean supplying countries in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Niger ($X) and Ghana ($X), together comprising 86% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +150.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -16.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 106% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, approx. X tons of beans (dry) were imported in Western Africa; increasing by 7.5% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports saw a measured expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, dry bean imports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 57%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Ghana (X tons) represented the main importer of beans (dry), achieving 40% of total imports. Cabo Verde (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Senegal (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Togo (X tons). All these countries together took near 44% share of total imports. The following importers - Nigeria (X tons) and Benin (X tons) - each finished at an 8.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to dry bean imports into Ghana stood at +5.9%. At the same time, Benin (+46.1%), Senegal (+32.9%), Togo (+28.7%), Cabo Verde (+9.1%) and Burkina Faso (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +46.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Nigeria (-4.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+10 p.p.), Togo (+6.4 p.p.), Cabo Verde (+5.9 p.p.), Benin (+3.9 p.p.) and Ghana (+3.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Burkina Faso (-2.6 p.p.) and Nigeria (-7.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Cabo Verde ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported beans (dry) in Western Africa, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 6.9% share.

In Cabo Verde, dry bean imports increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ghana (-0.9% per year) and Senegal (+5.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -9% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
