Dry Vegetable Market Size in Western Africa

In 2022, the West African dry vegetable market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, dry vegetable production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, approx. X tons of dry vegetables were exported in Western Africa; surging by 3.9% on the year before. In general, exports showed a moderate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 124%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dry vegetable exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Togo was the largest exporter of dry vegetables in Western Africa, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 56% of total exports in 2022. Niger (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Senegal (12%) and Cote d'Ivoire (10%). Nigeria (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Mali (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from Togo increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Niger (+39.7%), Ghana (+7.2%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+7.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +39.7% from 2012-2022. Senegal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Nigeria (-1.7%) and Mali (-11.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Niger (+12 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+3.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Nigeria, Senegal and Mali saw its share reduced by -2%, -5.3% and -8.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X), Niger ($X) and Togo ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 84% of total exports.

Niger, with a CAGR of +39.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 2.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 89%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+9.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, overseas purchases of dry vegetables were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, imports showed noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 99% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, dry vegetable imports soared to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +110.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Senegal (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) were the largest importers of dry vegetables in Western Africa, together accounting for near 70% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), comprising a 19% share of total imports. Benin (X tons), Niger (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Benin (with a CAGR of +17.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest dry vegetable importing markets in Western Africa were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Senegal ($X), with a combined 92% share of total imports. Benin, Niger and Ghana lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 4.3%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Niger, with a CAGR of +16.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -4.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 59%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
