In 2022, the amount of eggplants (aubergines) exported in Western Africa surged to X tons, growing by 22% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, exports recorded a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 190% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, eggplant exports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports posted noticeable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 204% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Burkina Faso was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 66% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Guinea (X tons) and Senegal (X tons), together generating a 31% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to eggplant exports from Burkina Faso stood at +39.3%. At the same time, Senegal (+43.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +43.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Guinea (-9.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Burkina Faso (+62 p.p.) and Senegal (+13 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Guinea (-66 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X) remains the largest eggplant supplier in Western Africa, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Guinea ($X), with an 18% share of total exports.

In Burkina Faso, eggplant exports expanded at an average annual rate of +33.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Guinea (-10.7% per year) and Senegal (+42.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -26.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 65% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, the amount of eggplants (aubergines) imported in Western Africa declined rapidly to X tons, waning by -44.4% against 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 1,556%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, eggplant imports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 1,536% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Mauritania dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 93% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Niger (X tons), committing a 4.9% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to eggplant imports into Mauritania stood at +32.5%. At the same time, Niger (+99.7%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+10.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +99.7% from 2012-2022. Mauritania (+6.7 p.p.) and Niger (+4.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Cote d'Ivoire saw its share reduced by -9.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Mauritania ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported eggplants (aubergines) in Western Africa, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Niger ($X), with a 15% share of total imports.

In Mauritania, eggplant imports increased at an average annual rate of +28.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Niger (+114.3% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 9.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable contraction.
