Ecg Market Size in Western Africa

In 2021, the West African ECG market decreased by -18.3% to $X for the first time since 2011, thus ending a nine-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, enjoyed prominent growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, ECG production contracted dramatically to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then shrank notably in the following year.

In 2021, Cote d'Ivoire (X units) was the key exporter of electro-cardiographs, constituting 47% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Benin (X units), Ghana (X units), Nigeria (X units) and Senegal (X units), together mixing up a 53% share of total exports.

Cote d'Ivoire was also the fastest-growing in terms of the electro-cardiographs exports, with a CAGR of +18.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+8.0%) and Benin (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Senegal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Nigeria (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (+34 p.p.), Benin (+21 p.p.) and Ghana (+3.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Senegal (-2.8 p.p.) and Nigeria (-9.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest ECG supplying countries in Western Africa were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Benin ($X) and Nigeria ($X), together accounting for 89% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +22.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, approx. X units of electro-cardiographs were imported in Western Africa; falling by -23.3% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 168%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ECG imports dropped modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 160% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X units) was the largest importer of electro-cardiographs, committing 53% of total imports. Ghana (X units) held a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (7.1%). The following importers - Guinea (X units), Senegal (X units), Liberia (X units) and Mauritania (X units) - together made up 12% of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +25.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Guinea (+43.9%), Mauritania (+6.1%), Ghana (+5.3%), Cote d'Ivoire (+1.7%) and Senegal (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +43.9% from 2012-2021. Liberia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria and Guinea increased by +36 and +3.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 78% share of total imports. Senegal, Guinea, Mauritania and Liberia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.

Among the main importing countries, Guinea, with a CAGR of +42.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 109% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per unit), while Liberia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+10.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
