Exports in Western Africa
In 2021, overseas shipments of electronic calculators and pocket-size data recording, reproducing and displaying machines with calculating functions were finally on the rise to reach X units after three years of decline. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 350% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, calculator exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 263% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Mauritania was the key exporting country with an export of about X units, which reached 41% of total exports. Ghana (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Togo (X units) and Nigeria (X units). All these countries together held near 42% share of total exports. Sierra Leone (X units), Liberia (X units) and Gambia (X units) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Sierra Leone (with a CAGR of +29.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Ghana ($X), Mauritania ($X) and Liberia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 77% of total exports.
Liberia, with a CAGR of +38.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, reducing by -2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 1,981%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while Sierra Leone ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+30.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, supplies from abroad of electronic calculators and pocket-size data recording, reproducing and displaying machines with calculating functions decreased by -26.1% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 85%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, calculator imports contracted markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 84% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped sharply in the following year.
Imports by Country
Ghana was the largest importer of electronic calculators and pocket-size data recording, reproducing and displaying machines with calculating functions in Western Africa, with the volume of imports reaching X units, which was approx. 48% of total imports in 2021. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Gambia (X units), Guinea (X units), Sierra Leone (X units) and Nigeria (X units). All these countries together held near 44% share of total imports. Liberia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Ghana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the electronic calculators and pocket-size data recording, reproducing and displaying machines with calculating functions imports, with a CAGR of +16.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Guinea (+13.4%), Cote d'Ivoire (+10.6%) and Sierra Leone (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Gambia (-10.2%), Liberia (-10.7%) and Nigeria (-22.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Guinea and Sierra Leone increased by +37, +13, +4.4 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 77% share of total imports. Guinea, Sierra Leone, Gambia and Liberia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.
Gambia, with a CAGR of +23.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, declining by -21.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a slight increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Gambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Gambia (+37.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
