Electronic Chip Market Size in Western Africa
The West African electronic chip market expanded modestly to $X in 2021, growing by 2% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -1.9% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, electronic chip production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Western Africa
In 2021, the amount of electronic chips exported in Western Africa skyrocketed to X units, growing by 568% against 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic decrease. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, electronic chip exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted strong growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Guinea (X units) was the main exporter of electronic chips, creating 74% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X units), committing a 17% share of total exports. The following exporters - Togo (X units) and Mali (X units) - together made up 5.5% of total exports.
Guinea was also the fastest-growing in terms of the electronic chips exports, with a CAGR of +89.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Togo (+36.9%) and Nigeria (+32.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Mali (-3.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Guinea (+74 p.p.), Nigeria (+17 p.p.), Togo (+3.3 p.p.) and Mali (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Guinea ($X), Mali ($X) and Togo ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 76% of total exports.
Guinea, with a CAGR of +63.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at less than $X per unit in 2021, shrinking by -49.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 772,774%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per unit), while Nigeria (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+18.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Electronic Chip Imports
Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, overseas purchases of electronic chips increased by 9.9% to X units, rising for the sixth year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports recorded prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 77% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, electronic chip imports fell markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 110%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped significantly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Nigeria dominates imports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 91% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Burkina Faso (X units) and Ghana (X units) - each reached a 6.7% share of total imports.
Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the electronic chips imports, with a CAGR of +34.3% from 2012 to 2021. Burkina Faso (-1.4%) and Ghana (-3.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+61 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Burkina Faso (-14.9 p.p.) and Ghana (-18 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported electronic chips in Western Africa, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 15% share of total imports.
In Nigeria, electronic chip imports increased at an average annual rate of +32.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ghana (+8.3% per year) and Burkina Faso (+2.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, declining by -31.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2020, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while Burkina Faso ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
