In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of electronic machines and appliances for testing metals, when their volume decreased by -87.1% to X units. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 381%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2020, and then declined sharply in the following year.
In value terms, electronic metal tester exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 345%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Nigeria was the major exporting country with an export of around X units, which resulted at 81% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X units) and Ghana (X units), together achieving a 17% share of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the electronic machines and appliances for testing metals exports, with a CAGR of +17.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Senegal (+14.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Ghana (-3.7%) and Cote d'Ivoire (-9.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+31 p.p.) and Senegal (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana saw its share reduced by -12.5% and -15% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, the largest electronic metal tester supplying countries in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Senegal ($X), together accounting for 92% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Ghana, with a CAGR of +11.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, surging by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 265%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while Senegal ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+16.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of electronic machines and appliances for testing metals, when their volume decreased by -83.2% to X units. Overall, imports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 467% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units, and then fell remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, electronic metal tester imports fell remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 286% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Togo (X units), Guinea (X units) and Nigeria (X units) was the key importer of electronic machines and appliances for testing metals in Western Africa, committing 74% of total import. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Senegal (X units) and Ghana (X units). All these countries together took near 22% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Guinea (with a CAGR of +51.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported electronic machines and appliances for testing metals in Western Africa, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Togo ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria amounted to +12.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Togo (+36.1% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+34.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 34% against the previous year. Import price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, electronic metal tester import price decreased by -9.0% against 2019 indices. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Guinea ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
