After two years of growth, overseas shipments of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp decreased by -81.4% to X kg in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 851%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, filter block exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports faced a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 879%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire was the key exporter of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp in Western Africa, with the volume of exports recording X kg, which was approx. 84% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X kg) and Senegal (X kg), together generating a 16% share of total exports.

Cote d'Ivoire was also the fastest-growing in terms of the filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp exports, with a CAGR of +24.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nigeria (+5.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Senegal (-39.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest filter block supplier in Western Africa, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.

In Cote d'Ivoire, filter block exports increased at an average annual rate of +15.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (-2.9% per year) and Senegal (-42.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 242% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (-5.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, purchases abroad of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp increased by 16% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports posted prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 230%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, filter block imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 110%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Nigeria (X tons) was the largest importer of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp, generating 42% of total imports. Ghana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (17%). Guinea (X tons), Togo (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Benin (X tons), Mali (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Niger (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +21.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Niger (+29.4%), Ghana (+18.7%), Cote d'Ivoire (+11.9%), Mali (+7.2%), Benin (+5.3%) and Guinea (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +29.4% from 2012-2022. Burkina Faso and Togo experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Senegal (-6.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+25 p.p.), Ghana (+8.4 p.p.) and Niger (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Benin (-2 p.p.), Burkina Faso (-4.2 p.p.), Guinea (-4.6 p.p.), Togo (-7.2 p.p.) and Senegal (-15.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp in Western Africa, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 13% share.

In Ghana, filter block imports expanded at an average annual rate of +28.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+7.8% per year) and Nigeria (+8.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -16.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a slight shrinkage. Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+12.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
