After two years of growth, the West African fireclay market decreased by -5.4% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a mild decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Senegal (with a CAGR of +46.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Sierra Leone ($X) emerged as the largest fireclay supplier in Western Africa, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 14% share.

Imports in Western Africa

For the third consecutive year, Western Africa recorded growth in supplies from abroad of fireclay, which increased by 7.4% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 1,139%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fireclay imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 1,127%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Ghana represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 52% of total imports. Nigeria (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 29% share, followed by Mauritania (15%). Senegal (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
