Ghana represented the main exporter of fish fillets and other fish meat in Western Africa, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 46% of total exports in 2022. Mauritania (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Senegal (X tons) and Gambia (X tons). All these countries together took near 46% share of total exports. The following exporters - Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) - together made up 6% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +39.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Ghana ($X) remains the largest fish fillets and other fish meat supplier in Western Africa, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritania ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 19% share.
In Ghana, exports of fish fillets and other fish meat increased at an average annual rate of +10.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mauritania (+11.4% per year) and Senegal (-1.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -13.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+8.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa
In 2022, supplies from abroad of fish fillets and other fish meat decreased by -13.1% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 78%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, imports of fish fillets and other fish meat dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 47%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Nigeria (X tons), distantly followed by Mali (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons) represented the key importers of fish fillets and other fish meat, together generating 89% of total imports. The following importers - Niger (X tons) and Liberia (X tons) - together made up 6.1% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mali (with a CAGR of +76.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Cabo Verde ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 60% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire, Mali, Liberia and Niger lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.
Among the main importing countries, Mali, with a CAGR of +51.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, waning by -2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 44% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cabo Verde (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
