In 2021, Senegal (X tons) represented the largest exporter of fish fillets in batter or breadcrumbs in Western Africa, making up 99% of total export.
Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the fish fillets in batter or breadcrumbs exports, with a CAGR of -28.7% from 2012 to 2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Senegal increased by +98 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In Senegal, battered fish fillet exports declined by an average annual rate of -13.6% over the period from 2012-2021.

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 12% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 485% against the previous year. In 2021, overseas purchases of fish fillets in batter or breadcrumbs increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the seventh year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports saw significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 93% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, battered fish fillet imports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 80% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Cote d'Ivoire represented the key importer of fish fillets in batter or breadcrumbs in Western Africa, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 60% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons), together making up a 34% share of total imports. The following importers - Benin (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) - each resulted at a 3.7% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to battered fish fillet imports into Cote d'Ivoire stood at +39.2%. At the same time, Mali (+95.1%), Burkina Faso (+87.0%), Nigeria (+36.2%), Ghana (+17.0%) and Benin (+12.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +95.1% from 2012-2021. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (+25 p.p.), Mali (+13 p.p.) and Nigeria (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Benin (-6.6 p.p.) and Ghana (-26.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fish fillets in batter or breadcrumbs in Western Africa, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mali ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Cote d'Ivoire totaled +39.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mali (+101.0% per year) and Ghana (+13.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -8.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
