In 2022, approx. X tons of flax fiber were imported in Western Africa; with an increase of 49% against 2021 figures. Overall, imports showed a moderate increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 228%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, flax fiber imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 179%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Niger (X tons) represented the major importer of flax fiber, generating 53% of total imports. Senegal (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons). All these countries together took near 35% share of total imports. The following importers - Burkina Faso (X kg), Sierra Leone (X kg) and Guinea (X kg) - together made up 8.8% of total imports.

Imports into Niger increased at an average annual rate of +71.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Guinea (+84.1%), Mauritania (+64.4%), Senegal (+34.1%) and Burkina Faso (+10.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +84.1% from 2012-2022. Sierra Leone experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-17.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Niger (+52 p.p.), Senegal (+14 p.p.), Mauritania (+9 p.p.), Sierra Leone (+2.7 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+2.1 p.p.) and Guinea (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Cote d'Ivoire saw its share reduced by -85.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Niger ($X), Guinea ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 74% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Guinea, with a CAGR of +140.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 24% against the previous year. Import price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, flax fiber import price increased by +33.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 80%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guinea (+30.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
