After two years of decline, shipments abroad of floor coverings and mats of vulcanised rubber increased by 32% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 134%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, vulcanised rubber mats exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 118%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Sierra Leone (X tons) represented the major exporter of floor coverings and mats of vulcanised rubber, generating 57% of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Niger (X tons) and Senegal (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 35% share of total exports. The following exporters - Burkina Faso (X kg) and Nigeria (X kg) - each finished at a 4.4% share of total exports.

Exports from Sierra Leone increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Senegal (+28.5%), Cote d'Ivoire (+12.7%) and Niger (+10.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +28.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Burkina Faso (-1.1%) and Nigeria (-4.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Sierra Leone, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal and Niger increased by +14, +10, +7.2 and +6.7 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest vulcanised rubber mats supplying countries in Western Africa were Sierra Leone ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Senegal ($X), together accounting for 91% of total exports.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +19.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -3.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 178% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+6.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, supplies from abroad of floor coverings and mats of vulcanised rubber was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 200%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, vulcanised rubber mats imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) represented the main importer of floor coverings and mats of vulcanised rubber, achieving 44% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), together achieving a 46% share of total imports. The following importers - Benin (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) - together made up 4.6% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Ghana (with a CAGR of +14.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Senegal ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 76% share of total imports.

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -1.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 158% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Benin ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
