In 2021, shipments abroad of flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs decreased by -9.4% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 54% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, seafood meals and pellets exports fell rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then plummeted in the following year.
Exports by Country
Mauritania prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 79% of total exports in 2021. Guinea (X tons) held a 7.2% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Senegal (6.4%). Gambia (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to seafood meals and pellets exports from Mauritania stood at +13.3%. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+91.4%), Guinea (+86.9%) and Gambia (+58.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +91.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Senegal (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Guinea (+7.1 p.p.), Mauritania (+5.1 p.p.), Gambia (+3.6 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Senegal (-16.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Mauritania ($X) remains the largest seafood meals and pellets supplier in Western Africa, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Guinea ($X), with an 8.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 3.9% share.
In Mauritania, seafood meals and pellets exports increased at an average annual rate of +15.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Guinea (+88.2% per year) and Senegal (+11.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, waning by -6.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 19%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+14.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, purchases abroad of flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs decreased by -22.3% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, seafood meals and pellets imports reduced remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 81% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Nigeria represented the key importer of flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs in Western Africa, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 78% of total imports in 2021. Burkina Faso (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Benin (X tons). All these countries together held near 17% share of total imports. Ghana (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to seafood meals and pellets imports into Nigeria stood at -3.5%. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+16.6%) and Benin (+5.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +16.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-20.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Benin increased by +13, +9 and +3.8 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs in Western Africa, comprising 94% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Benin ($X), with a 3.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 0.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria stood at -2.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Benin (+13.7% per year) and Ghana (-27.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -12.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 23%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
