Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, overseas shipments of fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat increased by 11% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 5,706%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fresh pork carcase exports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 3,480% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Burkina Faso prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 94% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X kg), achieving a 5.6% share of total exports.

Exports from Burkina Faso decreased at an average annual rate of -16.3% from 2012 to 2022. Senegal (-9.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Burkina Faso (-2.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X) remains the largest fresh pork carcase supplier in Western Africa, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with an 8.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Burkina Faso amounted to -11.3%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -6.2% against the previous year. Export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, fresh pork carcase export price increased by +91.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 53%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, overseas purchases of fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat decreased by -16.5% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 130%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fresh pork carcase imports fell notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 175%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Ghana (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together constituting 90% of total imports. Mauritania (X tons), Liberia (X tons) and Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ghana (with a CAGR of +33.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat in Western Africa, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritania, with a 9.9% share.

In Ghana, fresh pork carcase imports increased at an average annual rate of +32.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+7.0% per year) and Mauritania (+3.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country
