The West African frozen pork cut market declined to $X in 2022, shrinking by -3.3% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +3.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 30%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Niger (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons), together comprising 83% of total production. These countries were followed by Mauritania, which accounted for a further 17%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mauritania (with a CAGR of +10.9%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in Western Africa
In 2022, shipments abroad of frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat decreased by -6.4% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a ten-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 104%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, frozen pork cut exports totaled $X in 2022. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -20.6% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 99% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Mauritania (X tons), together finishing at 100% of total export.
Mauritania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat exports, with a CAGR of +23.5% from 2012 to 2022. Mauritania (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Mauritania ($X) also remains the largest frozen pork cut supplier in Western Africa.
In Mauritania, frozen pork cut exports expanded at an average annual rate of +10.6% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, faced a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 22%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Mauritania.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Mauritania amounted to -10.4% per year.

Imports in Western Africa
Frozen pork cut imports fell to X tons in 2022, waning by -11.5% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 99% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, frozen pork cut imports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 63%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) represented the largest importer of frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat, mixing up 61% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Liberia (X tons) and Ghana (X tons), together committing a 33% share of total imports. Guinea (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
Cote d'Ivoire was also the fastest-growing in terms of the frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat imports, with a CAGR of +48.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Liberia (+12.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Guinea and Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Cote d'Ivoire (+55 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Guinea, Liberia and Ghana saw its share reduced by -7.2%, -16.4% and -18.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Liberia ($X) and Ghana ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 85% of total imports.
Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +45.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -1.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a perceptible reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 22%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guinea (+1.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
