Frozen Poultry Liver Market Size in Western Africa

After six years of growth, the West African frozen poultry liver market decreased by -8.2% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +73.9% against 2015 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, frozen poultry liver production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 22%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, overseas shipments of frozen poultry livers and offal decreased by -82% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports showed a sharp contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 102% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, frozen poultry liver exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a sharp contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 101% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Liberia was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 70% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Mauritania (X tons), achieving a 19% share of total exports. The following exporters - Togo (X tons), Benin (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) - together made up 8.5% of total exports.

Liberia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the frozen poultry livers and offal exports, with a CAGR of +5.2% from 2012 to 2022. Mauritania (-26.7%), Togo (-28.3%), Ghana (-31.7%) and Benin (-50.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Liberia (+69 p.p.) and Mauritania (+7.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Benin (-76.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Liberia ($X) emerged as the largest frozen poultry liver supplier in Western Africa, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritania ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Benin, with a 9.7% share.

In Liberia, frozen poultry liver exports contracted by an average annual rate of -1.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mauritania (-32.9% per year) and Benin (-46.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -51.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined notably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Benin ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Benin (+8.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

After five years of growth, overseas purchases of frozen poultry livers and offal decreased by -13.9% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 80% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, frozen poultry liver imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 78% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Ghana (X tons) represented the largest importer of frozen poultry livers and offal, making up 47% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Benin (X tons), Liberia (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Sierra Leone (X tons) and Gambia (X tons), together making up a 43% share of total imports. Mauritania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Guinea (+26.0%), Gambia (+19.0%), Mauritania (+17.3%), Liberia (+14.6%) and Sierra Leone (+9.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +26.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Benin (-2.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Guinea (+6 p.p.), Ghana (+5.8 p.p.), Liberia (+4.8 p.p.), Gambia (+3.1 p.p.) and Mauritania (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Benin (-25.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported frozen poultry livers and offal in Western Africa, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Benin ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Liberia, with an 8.6% share.

In Ghana, frozen poultry liver imports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Benin (-6.4% per year) and Liberia (+16.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, approximately equating the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a mild downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 18%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Ghana ($X per ton) and Guinea ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) and Liberia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
