In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest frozen scallops, including queen scallop supplier in Western Africa, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Gambia ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.
In Senegal, frozen scallops, including queen scallop exports increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Gambia (+20.8% per year) and Mauritania (+27.3% per year).

Imports in Western Africa
Frozen scallops, including queen scallop imports was estimated at X tons in 2021, remaining stable against the year before. Overall, imports showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, frozen scallops, including queen scallop imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a resilient expansion. The purchases of the four major importers of frozen scallops, including queen scallop, namely Mauritania, Senegal, Mali and Cote d'Ivoire, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Cabo Verde (X kg), committing a 4.7% share of total imports. The following importers - Togo (X kg) and Liberia (X kg) - each reached a 6.2% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Mali (with a CAGR of +79.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Mali ($X) and Senegal ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 55% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Mali, with a CAGR of +67.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 6.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 41%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Mauritania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cabo Verde (+13.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
