Candied Fruit Market Size in Western Africa

The West African candied fruit market reached $X in 2021, picking up by 1.8% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw buoyant growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Candied Fruit Production in Western Africa

In value terms, candied fruit production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the production volume increased by 46%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of candied fruit production was Nigeria (X tons), accounting for 66% of total volume. Moreover, candied fruit production in Nigeria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Niger (X tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Burkina Faso (X tons), with a 6.6% share.

In Nigeria, candied fruit production increased at an average annual rate of +12.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Niger (+11.6% per year) and Burkina Faso (+6.0% per year).

Candied Fruit Exports

Exports in Western Africa

In 2021, exports of candied fruits in Western Africa fell significantly to X tons, which is down by -67.3% on the year before. In general, exports recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 458%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, candied fruit exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate modest growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 737% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Ghana (X tons) represented the main exporter of candied fruits, constituting 65% of total exports. Senegal (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Burkina Faso (8.9%) and Cote d'Ivoire (5.7%). Togo (X kg) and Nigeria (X kg) held a minor share of total exports.

Ghana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the candied fruits exports, with a CAGR of +48.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+6.5%), Togo (+5.7%), Senegal (+4.8%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Nigeria (-38.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ghana (+64 p.p.), Senegal (+10 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+6.7 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+3.5 p.p.) and Togo (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Nigeria saw its share reduced by -76.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) remains the largest candied fruit supplier in Western Africa, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Burkina Faso ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with an 11% share.

In Ghana, candied fruit exports expanded at an average annual rate of +49.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Burkina Faso (+15.2% per year) and Senegal (+2.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 232% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+17.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Candied Fruit Imports

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, approx. X tons of candied fruits were imported in Western Africa; reducing by -9.4% on the previous year. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +17.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, candied fruit imports shrank to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 31%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Gambia (X tons) was the main importer of candied fruits, generating 57% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), Mauritania (X tons) and Ghana (X tons), together making up a 33% share of total imports. The following importers - Nigeria (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons) and Mali (X tons) - each finished at a 5.9% share of total imports.

Gambia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the candied fruits imports, with a CAGR of +34.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Senegal (+28.7%), Mali (+28.2%), Mauritania (+16.2%) and Ghana (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Cabo Verde (-13.2%) and Nigeria (-24.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Gambia (+50 p.p.), Senegal (+18 p.p.) and Mauritania (+3.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Cabo Verde (-8.6 p.p.) and Nigeria (-46.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest candied fruit importing markets in Western Africa were Senegal ($X), Gambia ($X) and Ghana ($X), together comprising 63% of total imports. Nigeria, Cabo Verde, Mali and Mauritania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

Mali, with a CAGR of +36.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 27%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
