In 2021, the West African coin game market increased by 4.9% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of games operated by coins, banknotes or discs, when their volume decreased by -42.5% to X units. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 105%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2020, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, coin game exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 151% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank notably in the following year.

Sierra Leone represented the largest exporter of games operated by coins, banknotes or discs in Western Africa, with the volume of exports finishing at X units, which was approx. 51% of total exports in 2021. Nigeria (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 22% share, followed by Togo (12%) and Burkina Faso (10%).

Exports from Sierra Leone increased at an average annual rate of +21.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nigeria (+102.8%), Burkina Faso (+26.4%) and Togo (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +102.8% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso increased by +22, +21 and +6.1 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Sierra Leone ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Togo ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 93% share of total exports.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +141.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, jumping by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 77% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2021, the the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Burkina Faso ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+19.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, supplies from abroad of games operated by coins, banknotes or discs increased by 76% to X units, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports posted a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 86% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, coin game imports declined dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 92%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of coin game imports in 2021 were Mauritania (X units), Ghana (X units), Sierra Leone (X units), Nigeria (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units), together finishing at 84% of total import. It was distantly followed by Gambia (X units), committing a 4.6% share of total imports. Niger (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Gambia (with a CAGR of +74.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Ghana ($X) and Nigeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 45% of total imports. Sierra Leone, Mauritania, Niger and Gambia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.

Among the main importing countries, Mauritania, with a CAGR of +10.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -62.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 55%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Gambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Niger (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
