In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of garlic production in Western Africa expanded slightly to X ha, with an increase of 2.6% against the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area recorded a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to garlic production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In 2022, shipments abroad of garlic decreased by -79.9% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 286%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, garlic exports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 131%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Nigeria represented the major exporter of garlic in Western Africa, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 67% of total exports in 2022. Benin (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Mauritania (X tons). All these countries together took near 20% share of total exports. Niger (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +18.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Benin (+36.5%) and Mauritania (+22.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +36.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Ghana (-1.2%), Senegal (-30.4%), Niger (-31.6%) and Cote d'Ivoire (-37.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+65 p.p.), Benin (+11 p.p.), Mauritania (+8.4 p.p.) and Ghana (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Senegal, Niger and Cote d'Ivoire saw its share reduced by -15%, -21.8% and -44.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) emerged as the largest garlic supplier in Western Africa, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritania ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Benin, with a 4.3% share.

In Nigeria, garlic exports increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mauritania (+27.2% per year) and Benin (+27.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 210% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed a pronounced expansion. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritania ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

For the third year in a row, Western Africa recorded growth in overseas purchases of garlic, which increased by 54% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Nigeria was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 54% of total imports. Senegal (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Mali (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 36% share of total imports. The following importers - Burkina Faso (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons) - together made up 8.1% of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the garlic imports, with a CAGR of +103.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Guinea (+17.7%), Burkina Faso (+12.7%), Cote d'Ivoire (+12.0%), Mali (+9.7%), Senegal (+9.1%) and Mauritania (+7.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Nigeria (+53 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Burkina Faso (-1.6 p.p.), Mauritania (-2.2 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (-3.2 p.p.), Mali (-4.3 p.p.) and Senegal (-22.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported garlic in Western Africa, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 9.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 3.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria stood at +114.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Senegal (+3.9% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+4.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 66% against the previous year. Import price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, garlic import price increased by +78.7% against 2018 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
