Gear Box Market Size in Western Africa

The West African gear box market shrank to $X in 2022, dropping by -4% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded prominent growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Senegal (X units) and Nigeria (X units) prevails in exports structure, together mixing up 80% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X units), comprising an 8.8% share of total exports. Cabo Verde (X units) and Niger (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Cabo Verde (with a CAGR of +21.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest gear box supplier in Western Africa, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Burkina Faso, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Senegal amounted to +23.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nigeria (-5.5% per year) and Burkina Faso (+6.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, waning by -39.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 190% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per unit), while Niger ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Western Africa

For the fourth consecutive year, Western Africa recorded growth in overseas purchases of gear boxes, which increased by 16% to X units in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 53%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, gear box imports rose markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Nigeria (X units) and Ghana (X units) represented roughly 61% of total imports in 2022. Senegal (X units) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Guinea (6.6%), Mauritania (5.6%) and Cote d'Ivoire (4.6%). The following importers - Mali (X units) and Burkina Faso (X units) - each resulted at a 4.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Mauritania (with a CAGR of +23.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Guinea ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Ghana ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 54% of total imports.

Guinea, with a CAGR of +20.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, leveling off at the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 28%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
