Ginger Market Size in Western Africa

The West African ginger market declined modestly to $X in 2022, reducing by -2.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Ginger Production in Western Africa

Nigeria (X tons) remains the largest ginger producing country in Western Africa, comprising approx. 95% of total volume. Moreover, ginger production in Nigeria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Mali (X tons), more than tenfold.

The shipments of the one major exporters of ginger, namely Nigeria, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ginger exports, with a CAGR of -1.2% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) also remains the largest ginger supplier in Western Africa.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, the amount of ginger imported in Western Africa fell rapidly to X tons, reducing by -39.3% against the year before. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 169%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ginger imports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Burkina Faso (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Ghana (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 22% share of total imports. In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ginger in Western Africa, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Mali, with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Ghana amounted to +40.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+8.4% per year) and Mali (+31.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 83% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton.
