Exports in Western Africa
For the third year in a row, Western Africa recorded growth in shipments abroad of glass electrical insulators, which increased by 92% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, glass electrical insulator exports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 48% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Benin was the major exporter of glass electrical insulators in Western Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X units, which was near 82% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X units), achieving an 18% share of total exports.
Benin experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of glass electrical insulators. Nigeria (-65.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Benin (+81 p.p.) and Nigeria (+17 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest glass electrical insulator supplying countries in Western Africa were Benin ($X) and Nigeria ($X).
Among the main exporting countries, Benin, with a CAGR of 0.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, reducing by -65.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 780% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Benin stood at $X per unit.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (-28.2%).

Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, after three years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of glass electrical insulators, when their volume decreased by -2.5% to X units. In general, imports, however, posted a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 126%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, glass electrical insulator imports reduced notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 117% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Nigeria was the key importing country with an import of about X units, which accounted for 46% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Guinea (X units), together achieving a 40% share of total imports. Togo (X units), Mauritania (X units) and Gambia (X units) held a minor share of total imports.
Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +30.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Gambia (+75.8%), Guinea (+52.2%), Togo (+24.7%), Cote d'Ivoire (+21.3%) and Mauritania (+16.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Gambia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +75.8% from 2012-2021. Nigeria (+22 p.p.), Guinea (+15 p.p.) and Gambia (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mauritania saw its share reduced by -1.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported glass electrical insulators in Western Africa, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Guinea, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria totaled +23.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+9.1% per year) and Guinea (+21.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, falling by -15.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 29%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritania ($X per unit), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Gambia (+14.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
