The West African starch glue market shrank to $X in 2021, declining by -10.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed resilient growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of glues based on starches, dextrins or other modified starches decreased by -18.4% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 860% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, starch glue exports declined modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 2,505% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ghana prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), creating a 4.9% share of total exports.

Ghana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the glues based on starches, dextrins or other modified starches exports, with a CAGR of +16.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+8.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Ghana (+25 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-1.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) remains the largest starch glue supplier in Western Africa, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 1.3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Ghana stood at +29.2%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 171% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+11.4%).

Imports in Western Africa

After four years of growth, purchases abroad of glues based on starches, dextrins or other modified starches decreased by -53% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 66%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, starch glue imports declined rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 76% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) represented the key importer of glues based on starches, dextrins or other modified starches, creating 43% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Mali (X tons), together achieving a 32% share of total imports. Gambia (X tons), Togo (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Mauritania (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and Niger (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to starch glue imports into Nigeria stood at +3.9%. At the same time, Guinea (+18.5%), Senegal (+13.5%), Togo (+9.9%), Niger (+7.5%), Gambia (+4.2%) and Ghana (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +18.5% from 2012-2021. Mali, Cote d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mauritania (-17.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+8.8 p.p.), Nigeria (+8.1 p.p.), Togo (+2.2 p.p.) and Guinea (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Mauritania (-18.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported glues based on starches, dextrins or other modified starches in Western Africa, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 9.9% share.

In Nigeria, starch glue imports decreased by an average annual rate of -4.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+5.7% per year) and Ghana (-4.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable decline. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
