The West African goat hides and skins market contracted to $X in 2021, declining by -5.1% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The average goat hides and skins yield shrank slightly to X kg per head in 2021, waning by -1.9% against 2020 figures. In general, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 6.1% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X kg per head in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the number of animals slaughtered for goat hides and skins production in Western Africa contracted modestly to X heads, standing approx. at 2020 figures. This number increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 6.5% against the previous year. After three years of decline, shipments abroad of goat or kid hides and skins increased by 7.5% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 60% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, goat hides and skins exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 141% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Nigeria prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 76% of total exports in 2021. Senegal (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Mauritania (X tons) and Ghana (X tons). All these countries together took near 19% share of total exports. The following exporters - Togo (X tons) and Benin (X tons) - each resulted at a 3.9% share of total exports.

Exports from Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +37.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Benin (+106.5%), Ghana (+60.1%), Togo (+29.9%) and Mauritania (+16.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +106.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Senegal (-25.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria, Ghana, Mauritania, Togo and Benin increased by +71, +6.1, +4.7, +2.1 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest goat hides and skins supplying countries in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Senegal ($X), with a combined 61% share of total exports.

Ghana, with a CAGR of +85.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 189% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+15.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of goat or kid hides and skins, when their volume decreased by -42.3% to X tons. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 173% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In value terms, goat hides and skins imports reduced dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 240%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank markedly in the following year.
