Overall, exports continue to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 11,718% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, goat meat exports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports faced a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 5,017% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. Exports by Country

Benin was the key exporter of goat meat in Western Africa, with the volume of exports resulting at X kg, which was approx. 68% of total exports in 2022. In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 5.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 406%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, the amount of goat meat imported in Western Africa declined to X tons, with a decrease of -11.6% compared with 2021. In general, imports, however, posted prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 78% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, goat meat imports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 86% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Mali (X tons) represented the main importer of goat meat, making up 74% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Liberia (X tons), together committing an 18% share of total imports. Ghana (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Mali was also the fastest-growing in terms of the goat meat imports, with a CAGR of +32.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Liberia (+21.0%) and Guinea (+17.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Cote d'Ivoire experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Ghana (-9.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mali (+64 p.p.) and Liberia (+4.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-12.8 p.p.) and Ghana (-19.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mali ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported goat meat in Western Africa, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Liberia, with a 4.8% share.

In Mali, goat meat imports increased at an average annual rate of +35.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+5.3% per year) and Liberia (+16.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 1.6% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 27%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
