Grape Market Size in Western Africa

After five years of growth, the West African grape market decreased by -11.9% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Grape Production in Western Africa

In value terms, grape production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production posted a temperate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 5,068%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Burkina Faso (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of grape production, accounting for 99.9% of total volume.

In Burkina Faso, grape production expanded at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012-2022.

Grape Exports

Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, the amount of grapes exported in Western Africa dropped modestly to X tons, which is down by -2.9% compared with 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 1,347%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, grape exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 1,408%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Burkina Faso (X tons) was the largest exporter of grapes, making up 58% of total exports. Mauritania (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Benin (X tons). All these countries together took near 34% share of total exports. Senegal (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Burkina Faso was also the fastest-growing in terms of the grapes exports, with a CAGR of +35.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Benin (+24.0%), Senegal (+13.3%) and Mauritania (+7.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Burkina Faso (+52 p.p.), Benin (+5.4 p.p.) and Senegal (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Ghana (-2.1 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (-37.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mauritania ($X), Burkina Faso ($X) and Benin ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 82% share of total exports.

Benin, with a CAGR of +35.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 9.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 47%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritania ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Benin (+9.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Grape Imports

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of grapes, when their volume decreased by -9.2% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, grape imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 40%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

Ghana (X tons), Mauritania (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) represented roughly 73% of total imports in 2022. Mali (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Burkina Faso (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons). All these countries together held near 19% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +40.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Mauritania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 49% share of total imports. Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Cabo Verde and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.

Mali, with a CAGR of +33.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -5.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cabo Verde (+0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
