Exports by Country

Togo was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 65% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Ghana (X tons), together achieving a 33% share of total exports.

Togo was also the fastest-growing in terms of the groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) exports, with a CAGR of +332.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nigeria (+47.3%), Senegal (+9.2%) and Ghana (+7.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. In value terms, Togo ($X) remains the largest non-wheat groats supplier in Western Africa, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Togo totaled +322.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Senegal (+9.8% per year) and Nigeria (+44.2% per year).

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -15.3% against the previous year. Export price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine-year period. In 2021, the amount of groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) imported in Western Africa expanded to X tons, increasing by 4.6% against the previous year. In general, imports enjoyed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 126%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, non-wheat groats imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a resilient increase. By contrast, Mauritania (-11.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+38 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+8.8 p.p.) and Benin (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Mali (-4.7 p.p.), Senegal (-5.5 p.p.), Mauritania (-12.2 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (-14.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) in Western Africa, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Burkina Faso, with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria amounted to +28.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+0.4% per year) and Burkina Faso (+73.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Import price indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
