Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 87% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Ghana represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 66% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Benin (X tons), together mixing up a 29% share of total imports. Sierra Leone (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to animal guts imports into Ghana stood at +11.3%. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+26.6%), Sierra Leone (+23.5%) and Benin (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +26.6% from 2012-2022. Cote d'Ivoire (+13 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ghana and Benin saw its share reduced by -2.1% and -13.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported guts, bladders and stomachs of animals in Western Africa, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Benin, with an 18% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Ghana totaled +7.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+23.8% per year) and Benin (+3.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 6.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 7.9% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Benin ($X per ton), while Sierra Leone ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Benin (+0.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
