In 2021, the amount of gypsum, anhydrite and limestone exported in Western Africa contracted rapidly to X tons, reducing by -28.8% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, exports recorded a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 58%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, gypsum, anhydrite and limestone exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 67% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Togo represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 74% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Benin (X tons), achieving a 19% share of total exports. The following exporters - Mauritania (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) - together made up 6% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to gypsum, anhydrite and limestone exports from Togo stood at -9.1%. At the same time, Benin (+974.6%) and Mauritania (+37.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +974.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-20.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Benin (+19 p.p.) and Mauritania (+4.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Ghana (-4.9 p.p.) and Togo (-17.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Togo ($X) remains the largest gypsum, anhydrite and limestone supplier in Western Africa, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Benin ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Mauritania, with a 5.5% share.
In Togo, gypsum, anhydrite and limestone exports declined by an average annual rate of -9.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Benin (+473.2% per year) and Mauritania (+30.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -1.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 23% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Mauritania ($X per ton) and Ghana ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) and Togo ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Gypsum, Anhydrite And Limestone
Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, the amount of gypsum, anhydrite and limestone imported in Western Africa skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 65% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports enjoyed a buoyant increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, gypsum, anhydrite and limestone imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 35%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Nigeria (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) represented roughly 52% of total imports in 2021. Ghana (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Guinea (7.5%), Benin (7.3%) and Senegal (6.9%). Togo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of +24.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported gypsum, anhydrite and limestone in Western Africa, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with an 8.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with an 8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria stood at +14.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (-1.5% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+9.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
