The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, hair spray export price decreased by -42.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 34%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was decline in overseas purchases of hair sprays, when their volume decreased by -0.7% to X tons. Overall, imports saw a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hair spray imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

Nigeria (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) dominates imports structure, together making up 79% of total imports. Senegal (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Mauritania (X tons). All these countries together took near 17% share of total imports. Benin (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Ghana (with a CAGR of +38.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Senegal ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 88% of total imports.

Ghana, with a CAGR of +39.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -7.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, hair spray import price decreased by -11.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 95% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton.
