Exports in Western Africa
In 2022, the amount of handbags exported in Western Africa contracted modestly to X units, shrinking by -4.9% compared with 2021 figures. In general, exports continue to indicate a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, handbag exports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Ghana (X units) and Nigeria (X units) represented the main exporters of handbags in Western Africa, together achieving 54% of total exports. Mali (X units) held a 9.7% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (9%), Senegal (8.3%) and Benin (6.8%). Liberia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Liberia (with a CAGR of +33.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Ghana ($X) remains the largest handbag supplier in Western Africa, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with an 8.1% share.
In Ghana, handbag exports increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nigeria (-0.8% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+3.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, shrinking by -2.1% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Liberia ($X per unit), while Benin ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Handbag Imports
Imports in Western Africa
After three years of growth, overseas purchases of handbags decreased by -10.7% to X units in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded modest growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, handbag imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 78%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Burkina Faso (X units), distantly followed by Ghana (X units), Guinea (X units), Liberia (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Senegal (X units) represented the largest importers of handbags, together mixing up 80% of total imports. Benin (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +23.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported handbags in Western Africa, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Guinea, with a 9.7% share.
In Ghana, handbag imports increased at an average annual rate of +20.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+19.1% per year) and Guinea (+8.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 58%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while Benin ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
