The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 218% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Nigeria prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 94% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X kg), committing a 4.8% share of total exports.

Imports in Western Africa

Hard plastic comb imports contracted significantly to X tons in 2022, reducing by -24.3% on the previous year. In general, imports recorded a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hard plastic comb imports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 55%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped notably in the following year.

In 2022, Ghana (X tons) was the largest importer of hard rubber or plastic combs, mixing up 45% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons), together comprising a 40% share of total imports. The following importers - Burkina Faso (X tons) and Sierra Leone (X tons) - together made up 7.4% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to hard plastic comb imports into Ghana stood at -6.7%. At the same time, Senegal (+40.8%), Sierra Leone (+13.3%), Burkina Faso (+10.5%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+7.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +40.8% from 2012-2022. Mauritania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Guinea (-5.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone and Mauritania increased by +18, +6.2, +3, +2.7 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hard rubber or plastic combs in Western Africa, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Ghana amounted to -4.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+48.0% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+12.2% per year).
