Hazelnut Market Size in Western Africa

The West African hazelnut market shrank to $X in 2021, waning by -12.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption saw a noticeable reduction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

From 2016 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Niger (X tons) remains the largest hazelnut producing country in Western Africa, comprising approx. 55% of total volume. Moreover, hazelnut production in Niger exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Togo (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Ghana (X tons), with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Niger totaled +4.3%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Togo (+2.0% per year) and Ghana (+40.2% per year).

Exports in Western Africa

Hazelnut exports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, jumping by 43% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 41,727%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hazelnut exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 8,160% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Niger was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 73% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), creating a 26% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to hazelnut exports from Niger stood at +50.1%. At the same time, Ghana (+314.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +314.3% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ghana increased by +26 percentage points.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) emerged as the largest hazelnut supplier in Western Africa, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Niger ($X), with an 18% share of total exports.

In Ghana, hazelnut exports increased at an average annual rate of +740.1% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 199% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Niger stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+102.7%).

Hazelnut Imports

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, hazelnut imports in Western Africa shrank rapidly to X tons, reducing by -59.4% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 770%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hazelnut imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 935% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of hazelnuts, namely Niger, Senegal and Ghana, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Cabo Verde (X kg), creating a 6.8% share of total imports. Liberia (X kg), Cote d'Ivoire (X kg) and Nigeria (X kg) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Cabo Verde (with a CAGR of +74.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Niger ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hazelnuts in Western Africa, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 15% share.

In Niger, hazelnut imports expanded at an average annual rate of +70.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ghana (+59.1% per year) and Senegal (+29.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 86% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a resilient expansion. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
