Hemp Tow Market Size in Western Africa

The West African hemp tow market skyrocketed to $X in 2022, growing by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption saw a remarkable increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Hemp Tow Production in Western Africa

In value terms, hemp tow production rose slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of hemp tow, when their volume decreased by -99.7% to X kg. Over the period under review, exports showed a noticeable curtailment. The smallest decline of -64.3% was in 2014. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In value terms, hemp tow exports shrank remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 12,765%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then shrank notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Senegal (X kg) represented the major exporter of hemp tow in Western Africa, creating 100% of total export.

Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hemp tow exports, with a CAGR of +56.7% from 2012 to 2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Senegal increased by +99 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In Senegal, hemp tow exports expanded at an average annual rate of +68.7% over the period from 2012-2021.

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -43.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a perceptible slump. Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was growth in supplies from abroad of hemp tow, when their volume increased by 2.6% to X tons. In general, imports enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 214% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hemp tow imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 367% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Nigeria prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 92% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Niger (X tons), constituting a 6.3% share of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hemp tow imports, with a CAGR of +26.6% from 2012 to 2022. Niger experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Nigeria (+71 p.p.) and Niger (+6.3 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hemp tow in Western Africa, comprising 96% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Niger ($X), with a 2.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria totaled +12.2%.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 26% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a slight reduction. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Niger stood at $X per ton.
