The West African market for horse, mule and donkey meat rose slightly to $X in 2022, surging by 2.2% against the previous year. Overall, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 4.5%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X kg per head, and then reduced in the following year.

The global number of animals slaughtered for horse, mule and donkey meat production totaled X heads in 2022, with an increase of 2.2% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, the number of producing animals showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the number of producing animals increased by 6.4%. As a result, the amount of animals produced attained the peak level of X heads. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of this number remained at a lower figure.

As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, horse, mule and donkey meat exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 5,978,422% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Benin represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 88% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Mauritania (X tons), constituting a 12% share of total exports.

Benin was also the fastest-growing in terms of the horse, mule and donkey meat exports, with a CAGR of +251.8% from 2015 to 2022. Mauritania (-51.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
