Exports in Western Africa

After three years of growth, shipments abroad of household refrigerators and freezers (not combined) decreased by -6.9% to X units in 2022. Total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 49%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-combined refrigerator-freezer exports shrank to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +47.7% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Senegal (X units) was the key exporter of household refrigerators and freezers (not combined), achieving 64% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Togo (X units) and Nigeria (X units), together creating a 22% share of total exports. Ghana (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Sierra Leone (X units) and Mali (X units) held a little share of total exports.

Exports from Senegal increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Togo (+9.5%), Mali (+8.7%), Sierra Leone (+6.0%) and Nigeria (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +9.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-7.5%) and Ghana (-14.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+25 p.p.) and Togo (+7.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-6.4 p.p.) and Ghana (-21.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest non-combined refrigerator-freezer supplier in Western Africa, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Togo ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 5% share.

In Senegal, non-combined refrigerator-freezer exports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Togo (+8.8% per year) and Nigeria (-0.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, flattening at the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 6.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per unit), while Mali ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of household refrigerators and freezers (not combined) decreased by -3% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a noticeable expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 52%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-combined refrigerator-freezer imports totaled $X in 2022. Total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Nigeria was the major importing country with an import of about X units, which recorded 40% of total imports. Ghana (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 25% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (7.9%), Senegal (6%) and Guinea (6%). Burkina Faso (X units) and Sierra Leone (X units) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Ghana (with a CAGR of +11.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported household refrigerators and freezers (not combined) in Western Africa, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 6.6% share.

In Nigeria, non-combined refrigerator-freezer imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ghana (+4.9% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+4.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 8.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a mild setback. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per unit), while Guinea ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
