Exports in Western Africa
In 2021, overseas shipments of household sewing machines decreased by -42.5% to X units, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 79%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, household sewing machine exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 99%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Nigeria (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units) dominates exports structure, together making up 79% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Togo (X units), achieving a 6.2% share of total exports. The following exporters - Liberia (X units), Ghana (X units), Senegal (X units) and Mali (X units) - together made up 9.5% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +35.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, the largest household sewing machine supplying countries in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Togo ($X), with a combined 90% share of total exports.
Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +40.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 9.2% against the previous year. Export price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, household sewing machine export price decreased by -10.6% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 46% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while Liberia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+14.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of household sewing machines, when their volume decreased by -13.8% to X units. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 91% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, household sewing machine imports shrank significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then declined dramatically in the following year.
Imports by Country
Ghana (X units) and Nigeria (X units) represented roughly 68% of total imports in 2021. Guinea (X units) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Togo (X units) and Benin (X units). All these countries together held near 23% share of total imports. Mali (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Togo (with a CAGR of +23.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported household sewing machines in Western Africa, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Guinea, with a 5.8% share.
In Nigeria, household sewing machine imports increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ghana (+14.9% per year) and Guinea (+23.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, falling by -4.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a mild shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
