Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 67% against the previous year. Exports from Ghana decreased at an average annual rate of -8.8% from 2012 to 2019. Niger and Sierra Leone experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Sierra Leone (+12 p.p.) and Niger (+3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2019, the share of Ghana (-15.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In Ghana, hydrazine and hydroxylamine exports contracted by an average annual rate of -13.1% over the period from 2012-2019. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sierra Leone (0.0% per year) and Niger (0.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2019, rising by 25% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 29%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2019, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2019, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Sierra Leone ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (-4.7%).

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, supplies from abroad of hydrazine and hydroxylamine and their inorganic salts decreased by -3.9% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 156% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In value terms, hydrazine and hydroxylamine imports shrank notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 203%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together making up 90% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Guinea (X tons), mixing up a 5.6% share of total imports. Nigeria (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Ghana (with a CAGR of +45.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Ghana ($X) and Guinea ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 94% share of total imports.

Ghana, with a CAGR of +60.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -16.4% against the previous year. Import price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, hydrazine and hydroxylamine import price increased by +79.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 52%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then plummeted in the following year.
