The West African skates market expanded sharply to $X in 2021, surging by 6.3% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a deep reduction. In value terms, skates exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 3,241%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Burkina Faso prevails in exports structure, reaching X kg, which was near 92% of total exports in 2021. Togo (X kg) and Niger (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to skates exports from Burkina Faso stood at +5.8%. At the same time, Togo (+20.0%) and Niger (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +20.0% from 2012-2021. While the share of Burkina Faso (+92 p.p.) and Togo (+4.2 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X) emerged as the largest skates supplier in Western Africa, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Togo ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.

In Burkina Faso, skates exports shrank by an average annual rate of -17.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Togo (+19.7% per year) and Niger (+1.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -54.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price faced a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 563% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, skates imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a precipitous shrinkage. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) were the main importers of ice skates and roller skates in Western Africa, together recording near 73% of total imports. Benin (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Ghana (7%). Cabo Verde (X kg) and Gambia (X kg) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Senegal (with a CAGR of +25.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Senegal ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Benin ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 85% of total imports.

Senegal, with a CAGR of +34.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -22.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Benin ($X per ton), while Cabo Verde ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
