After five years of growth, the West African industrial robot market decreased by -5.3% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a remarkable increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

After four years of decline, overseas shipments of industrial robots for multiple uses decreased by 0% to X units in 2020. Overall, exports saw a dramatic descent. The smallest decline of -44.4% was in 2017. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, industrial robot exports skyrocketed to $X in 2020. In general, exports showed a dramatic decrease. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Export Prices by Country

In 2020, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Niger.

From 2015 to 2020, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Niger amounted to 0.0% per year.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, supplies from abroad of industrial robots for multiple uses increased by 14% to X units, rising for the fifth year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports recorded notable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 356%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, industrial robot imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 353% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Nigeria represented the key importing country with an import of about X units, which reached 77% of total imports. Niger (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (5.1%). The following importers - Senegal (X units) and Ghana (X units) - each recorded a 4.2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to industrial robot imports into Nigeria stood at +2.5%. At the same time, Niger (+93.9%), Ghana (+25.1%), Senegal (+19.6%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+15.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +93.9% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Niger, Cote d'Ivoire and Senegal increased by +12, +3 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Niger ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 65% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Niger, with a CAGR of +92.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, growing by 21% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 31% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+11.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
