Dental Instruments Market Size in Western Africa
In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the West African dental instruments market, when its value decreased by -11.2% to $X. The total consumption indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +47.0% against 2017 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then shrank in the following year.
Dental Instruments Production in Western Africa
In value terms, dental instruments production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +34.5% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then declined in the following year.
Dental Instruments Exports
Exports in Western Africa
After two years of growth, overseas shipments of instruments for dental sciences decreased by -36.1% to X units in 2021. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 1,372%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, dental instruments exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 328%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Ghana was the major exporting country with an export of around X units, which recorded 50% of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 21% share, followed by Senegal (15%) and Sierra Leone (7.3%). Nigeria (X units) and Mauritania (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Ghana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the instruments for dental sciences exports, with a CAGR of +57.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Senegal (+25.7%), Sierra Leone (+12.1%), Cote d'Ivoire (+5.7%) and Mauritania (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Nigeria (-14.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ghana (+48 p.p.) and Senegal (+9.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Mauritania (-1.6 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (-18.7 p.p.) and Nigeria (-32.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Ghana ($X) remains the largest dental instruments supplier in Western Africa, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sierra Leone ($X), with a 5.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 4.7% share.
In Ghana, dental instruments exports expanded at an average annual rate of +92.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sierra Leone (+21.7% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-0.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 170% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 253%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while Senegal ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+22.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Dental Instruments Imports
Imports in Western Africa
After three years of growth, overseas purchases of instruments for dental sciences decreased by -34.8% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 144% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2020, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, dental instruments imports declined notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed notable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 27%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
Imports by Country
Nigeria was the largest importer of instruments for dental sciences in Western Africa, with the volume of imports accounting for X units, which was approx. 59% of total imports in 2021. Ghana (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (7.9%) and Senegal (6.3%). Mali (X units), Togo (X units) and Cabo Verde (X units) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to dental instruments imports into Nigeria stood at +5.0%. At the same time, Togo (+18.5%), Senegal (+14.6%), Cote d'Ivoire (+8.8%), Ghana (+8.3%), Mali (+6.5%) and Cabo Verde (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +18.5% from 2012-2021. Senegal (+3.1 p.p.), Ghana (+2.3 p.p.) and Togo (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Nigeria saw its share reduced by -7.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest dental instruments importing markets in Western Africa were Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Senegal ($X), together comprising 61% of total imports. Mali, Togo, Cote d'Ivoire and Cabo Verde lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.
Togo, with a CAGR of +26.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, growing by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 100% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
