In value terms, optical radiation instruments exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Liberia (X units) was the key exporter of instruments using optical radiations, committing 56% of total exports. Nigeria (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 22% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (5.1%) and Senegal (5.1%). Mali (X units), Ghana (X units) and Togo (X units) took a minor share of total exports.
Liberia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the instruments using optical radiations exports, with a CAGR of +114.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mali (+12.9%), Senegal (+11.5%) and Togo (+5.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Ghana (-2.7%), Cote d'Ivoire (-3.4%) and Nigeria (-4.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Liberia and Senegal increased by +56 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively. In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest optical radiation instruments supplier in Western Africa, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 6.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria stood at +2.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+10.2% per year) and Ghana (-0.8% per year).

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, which is down by -65.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 85%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 82% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, optical radiation instruments imports stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 52%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 61% share of total imports. Senegal, Mali, Togo, Benin, Mauritania and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.
Mali, with a CAGR of +52.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -9.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the import price increased by 15%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per unit), while Burkina Faso ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
