Exports in Western Africa

In 2021, wire and cable exports in Western Africa reduced notably to X tons, which is down by -16.4% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wire and cable exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 17%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Senegal represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 78% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Mauritania (X tons), constituting an 11% share of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Exports from Senegal increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritania (+9.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +9.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-9.4%) and Ghana (-14.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+9.8 p.p.) and Mauritania (+5.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-6 p.p.) and Ghana (-7.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest wire and cable supplier in Western Africa, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritania ($X), with an 8.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 7.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Senegal stood at -3.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritania (+11.8% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-8.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a pronounced decline. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Mauritania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

Wire and cable imports soared to X tons in 2021, jumping by 15% against the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wire and cable imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the four major importers of insulated wire and cable, namely Nigeria, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire and Senegal, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Guinea (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 6.4% share, followed by Mali (5.2%). Togo (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of +19.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest wire and cable importing markets in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a combined 55% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Senegal, Guinea, Mali and Togo, which together accounted for a further 30%.

Among the main importing countries, Togo, with a CAGR of +20.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
