In value terms, metal chain exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 606% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Benin (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) represented roughly 79% of total exports in 2022. Mauritania (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Ghana (X kg). All these countries together held approx. 14% share of total exports. Togo (X kg) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Senegal (with a CAGR of +45.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest metal chain supplier in Western Africa, comprising 42% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritania ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Cabo Verde, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Senegal amounted to +49.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritania (+57.8% per year) and Cabo Verde (+10.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 24% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed modest growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 75% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritania ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritania (+16.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa
In 2022, approx. X tons of iron or steel chain were imported in Western Africa; picking up by 110% against 2021. Overall, imports recorded buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 168% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, metal chain imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 85% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Burkina Faso (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together creating 70% of total imports. Senegal (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 14% share of total imports. Liberia (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +40.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 77% share of total imports.
Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +24.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -29.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 88%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
