After two years of decline, the West African market for jams, jellies, puree and pastes increased by 4.1% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -5.3% against 2018 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Production of Jams, Jellies, Puree And Pastes in Western Africa
In value terms, jam, jelly, puree and paste production expanded modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -6.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.
Exports of Jams, Jellies, Puree And Pastes
Exports in Western Africa
In 2021, approx. X tons of jams, jellies, puree and pastes were exported in Western Africa; which is down by -34.5% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 193%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, jam, jelly, puree and paste exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 118%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Mali was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 76% of total exports. Burkina Faso (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Senegal (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 19% share of total exports. Sierra Leone (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
Mali was also the fastest-growing in terms of the jams, jellies, puree and pastes exports, with a CAGR of +21.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Senegal (+11.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Sierra Leone (-1.7%) and Burkina Faso (-3.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mali (+44 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso saw its share reduced by -4.9% and -33.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Mali ($X) remains the largest jam, jelly, puree and paste supplier in Western Africa, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Burkina Faso, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Mali amounted to +20.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+8.5% per year) and Burkina Faso (-4.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a slight reduction. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sierra Leone (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Jams, Jellies, Puree And Pastes
Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, supplies from abroad of jams, jellies, puree and pastes increased by 26% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, jam, jelly, puree and paste imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +72.7% against 2017 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Senegal (X tons), distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Mauritania (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) were the key importers of jams, jellies, puree and pastes, together generating 85% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Guinea (with a CAGR of +18.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Senegal ($X), Mauritania ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 51% share of total imports. Nigeria, Ghana, Guinea and Cabo Verde lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.
Guinea, with a CAGR of +16.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 18% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 21%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Mauritania ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
