Exports in Western Africa

For the third year in a row, Western Africa recorded growth in overseas shipments of knives, scissors and blades, which increased by 2.7% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports posted a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 168%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, knife and scissors exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 108% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ghana was the major exporter of knives, scissors and blades in Western Africa, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 70% of total exports in 2021. Senegal (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons). All these countries together took near 23% share of total exports.

Ghana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the knives, scissors and blades exports, with a CAGR of +20.1% from 2012 to 2021. Senegal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Nigeria (-1.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ghana (+41 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Nigeria and Senegal saw its share reduced by -8.3% and -16.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) remains the largest knife and scissors supplier in Western Africa, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.

In Ghana, knife and scissors exports expanded at an average annual rate of +11.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+4.4% per year) and Nigeria (-12.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -23.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 67%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, approx. X tons of knives, scissors and blades were imported in Western Africa; with an increase of 12% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 271%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, knife and scissors imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate temperate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 150% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of knife and scissors imports in 2021 were Ghana (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), together finishing at 75% of total import. It was distantly followed by Guinea (X tons), comprising a 7.3% share of total imports. The following importers - Mauritania (X tons) and Togo (X tons) - each recorded a 7.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Senegal (with a CAGR of +20.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest knife and scissors importing markets in Western Africa were Ghana ($X), Senegal ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a combined 64% share of total imports. Nigeria, Guinea, Mauritania and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

Mauritania, with a CAGR of +27.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 33% against the previous year. In general, the import price enjoyed a resilient increase. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritania (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
