Exports in Western Africa
In 2021, overseas shipments of laptops and palm-top computers decreased by -4.4% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, exports, however, saw a perceptible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 69% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, laptop and tablet computer exports fell dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw tangible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 97% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Senegal (X units) represented the largest exporter of laptops and palm-top computers, making up 67% of total exports. Ghana (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Nigeria (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units). All these countries together took near 28% share of total exports.
Exports from Senegal increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+25.3%), Nigeria (+14.0%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+13.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +25.3% from 2012-2021. Senegal (+19 p.p.), Ghana (+11 p.p.), Nigeria (+4.6 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+3.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest laptop and tablet computer supplying countries in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Senegal ($X) and Ghana ($X), together accounting for 77% of total exports.
Nigeria, with a CAGR of +22.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, waning by -30.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 41% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Senegal ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, laptop and tablet computer imports in Western Africa surged to X units, growing by 25% compared with 2020. Total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +72.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, laptop and tablet computer imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 39%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Ghana represented the key importer of laptops and palm-top computers in Western Africa, with the volume of imports finishing at X units, which was approx. 40% of total imports in 2021. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 23% share, followed by Nigeria (9.2%), Senegal (6.8%) and Burkina Faso (6.2%). The following importers - Mali (X units) and Togo (X units) - together made up 6.9% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +12.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported laptops and palm-top computers in Western Africa, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with an 11% share.
In Ghana, laptop and tablet computer imports expanded at an average annual rate of +10.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+16.4% per year) and Nigeria (-18.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 13%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per unit), while Burkina Faso ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+9.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
