In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the West African laser market, when its value decreased by -7.7% to $X. Overall, consumption saw significant growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Sierra Leone (X units) and Nigeria (X units) represented roughly 73% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Niger (X units) and Senegal (X units), together comprising a 22% share of total exports. The following exporters - Ghana (X units) and Burkina Faso (X units) - each recorded a 3.7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Senegal (with a CAGR of +45.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest laser supplier in Western Africa, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Niger ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Sierra Leone, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria totaled +19.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Niger (+28.8% per year) and Sierra Leone (+67.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 142% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 158%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 137% against the previous year.
